Missouri State Senior Games
The Governor's Council has made it possible for Missouri's senior citizens to compete in a qualifying state finals competition to become eligible to go to the National Senior Games. In the past, there has been no coordinated statewide senior games program, but only games at the local level. The Missouri Senior State Games have been part of the Show-Me STATE GAMES since 1995, and is an Olympic style sports festival for senior athletes.
Purpose
The purpose of the Missouri State Senior Games is to:
- Provide an annual physical fitness event to promote a social, competitive, athletic and recreational event for older adults.
- Promote and create an interest in lifetime sports, recreation, and physical exercise as a means of enhancing one's quality of life.
- Create an awareness of the abilities and capabilities of older citizens.
- Foster an amateur athletic network of participants, volunteers, and sports enthusiasts throughout Missouri that encourages and promotes healthier life-styles.
- Create private as well as public support for physical fitness and amateur athletic training.
Sports
Sports included in the Missouri State Senior Games shall be those recognized by the US National Senior Sports Organization. Other sports which may benefit the citizens of Missouri may be included. Sports that are included in this years events are as follows:
- Archery
- Bowling
- Cycling
- Shooting
- Swimming
- Track and Field Events
- Badminton
- Shuffleboard
- Basketball
- Golf
- Horseshoes
- Pocket Billiards
- Racquetball
- Table Tennis
- Volleyball
- Soccer
- Softball
- Tennis
- Skill Contests
Residency
The Missouri State Senior Games is an "Open" event which means that out of state residents are eligible and encouraged to participate. In accordance with the U.S. National Senior Sports Organization (USNSO), the maximum number of out of state residents who may be on a team roster shall be limited to: 3-on-3 basketball - one (1); softball - three (3); and volleyball - three (3).
Age Requirements
The Missouri State Senior Games are open to anyone who is at least 50 years of age on the first day of the games held annually in June. Athletes will be required to provide proof of age (driver's license, birth certificate, etc.) when they check in.
Amateur Status
Professional athletes shall not be eligible to compete in the Missouri State Senior Games in the sport in which they are a professional until 20 years after the date they last competed as a professional. They may compete in other sports in which they have not competed professionally.
Awards
In the Olympic tradition, gold, silver and bronze medals will be awarded to the first, second and third place finalists in each age division of each event. Ribbons for fourth, fifth and sixth place will be awarded, except in tournaments, where only fourth place will be awarded.
